The Royal Birkdale Golf Club will host its sixth Women’s British Open when the Championship is staged there in 2014, continuing a strong association with the event that goes back to 1982 when Marta Figueras-Dotti took home the coveted title. The Championship returned in 1986 when England’s Laura Davies triumphed. Sophie Gustafson won in 2000 and five years later Korea’s Jeong Jang claimed her first professional victory by defeating Gustafson and another Korean, Young Kim, by four shots on 16-under par 272. In 2010 Yani Tseng, Number One on the Rolex Rankings, came out on top.
This celebrated club has a rich heritage in hosting the most important golf tournaments in the world and, in addition to five Women’s British Opens, has also welcomed two Ryder Cups in 1965 and 1969 and nine Open championships, the last won by the popular Irishman, Padraig Harrington in 2008.

The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the golfing highlights of the sporting calendar. In its 38th year, this year’s Championship makes its sixth appearance at one of the most famous and historic links courses in the UK, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Southport.. The famous club has been host to nine Open Championships and is a fitting stage for the world’s leading players to perform, over what will be four memorable days from the 10th – 13th of July 2013.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the most exciting Majors in golf. As one of only two Major Championships to be played outside the US, it is the most international with the 2013 field boasting players from 25 different nations, including the world’s top 15. The field for 2014 will be equally as strong and will include the reigning champion Stacy Lewis, past champions, Jiyai Shin and Yani Tseng along with Americans Lexi Thompson and Paula Creamer and Solheim Cup winners Catriona Matthew, Beatriz Recari and Suzann Petterson.
